CHOOSING SIDES
ALM No.84, January 2026
POETRY
choosing sides
talking faces at every turn,
sea and forest and mountain.
shifting lips and shitting asses
and baboon pride,
distance and air and space.
agendas and plans,
disgrace and lies,
fools and the fooled,
quiet and dark and solace.
noise and spectacle,
style and pomp and circumstance,
clothes and houses,
parties and drugs,
drunks and suits,
electric light,
makeup, shops,
restaurants, waiters,
digital illusions,
fire, water, bread.
the march of time,
the appreciation of time,
sea spray on your lips,
the first kiss from a girl,
moonlight by seashore,
whisper of trees,
somewhere
a long ways from here.
overwhelmed
and tired.
diminished.
the endless dizzying dance,
slavery and then bars,
sacrifice all
and then take inventory.
the brainless tarts
still grab your mind
and squeeze until empty,
only it's muted now
and you don't mind
the pain
quite so much.
you can sit quietly
and just drink.
it is
a welcome change.
the words and
the notes
have dwindled down
to a sad trickle,
but in spite of it
i feel ok.
a few gray hairs creep in.
diminished.
