LITERARY TECHNIQUES AND STORYTELLING DEVELOPMENT

ESSAYS

I chose to use the in-media res for my narrative format because it was the best for flashback sequences. I chose the first-person point of view because I thought Arlos would better explain his feelings. I wanted to tell his story from his eyes. I wanted to show the reader his feelings and thoughts. I chose the time dependent development technique because Arlos is racing against time to find his sister. He goes through time with one obstacle after another. Get ready to take off with the misadventure to his long-lost twin sister.
This is a story of Arlos Drake who wants to find his twin sister.
Arlos And his Misadventures
I lay awake on my bed waiting for the sun to rise. My body is not moving, but my eyes are wide open. I was thinking about my life and how easy it was before finding out about my twin sister. I was a well-known young man in high society. People thought me to be easy and kind natured. I almost never yelled at people unless I need them to give me attention for silence in meetings.
I have red curly hair and sapphire blue eyes. I am 6’1 and have a very slender light muscle tone. My sun kissed skin shines in the sun. I am a mix between my mother and father. I am highly intelligent when it comes to my family business. I enjoy reading to keep my vocabulary at par. I fear the ocean because I almost drowned. I dislike things with odd textures. I love to walk in the rain. This is because people can’t tell my emotions. This is because rain hid my tears when I was young. The sound of rain calms my soul. The rain is a reminder of the day his parents got married.
Still lying in bed waiting for the moment to get out of bed. I stared up at my celling contemplating my life and the way my life changed, so suddenly from being an only child to having a twin It has been three months since I found out since I found out about Aylla my twin sister. The family that adopted her kept her location a secret.
Three months prior I had found out about Aylla. I was having dinner with my parents at their house. The memory is like yesterday.
Flashback
Three months prior Arlos was at his parents’ house eating dinner. I was sitting at the dinner table with my mother and father. We were waiting for our main course. Happily chatting about the family business. We have come up with new ideas for the company. As we got our food my mother caught my attention. She looked at, my dad and it looked like he wanted to tell me something important.
My dad sat straight up, and d looked at me he said, “son your mom and I have something to tell you, he paused., “you have a twin sister.”
“What!” I yelled.
My eyes go wide at the news, and I scowl at them to tell me the rest of the story.
My father cleared his throat and spoke again “” you have a twin sister.”
In a fit of rage for the first time,” I have a twin sister.
My mother took a deep breath, “yes you do…” a defining silence from her when her next words hit, “We had to give her up for adoption Arlos.”
I took a deep breath to calm myself.
My Next words were “You think to tell me now…” I take another deep breath,
“Do you where she is?”
They answer in unison, “No the adoption was closed.”
Flash back ends
The very next day was when I contacted a private eye to find my sister. I still lay in bed counting down the minutes before I get the news of my sister. I am getting antsy with anticipation. I wanted to get up out of bed and go to my office, but I could not move. I took me an hour and 30 minutes to get up from my bed to go to my office. Today is the day I get my sister’s location. Three months it all took to find her. I’m still fighting to get up to go to my office.
The moment I get up and walk down the hall to my office to wait for the call is when I realized how anxious I was. I sat at my desk to do some paperwork. I had some projects to sig off on while waiting for the call. I run my family’s company and my own tech company.
This was a big step in life getting to my twin sister.
As I sat in my office in the early hours of the morning waiting for the call that my sister had been found.
I sat anxiously on the waited as the hours ticked by. I went from sitting to pacing around the office waiting for the information. I stared at the phone waiting for the phone to light up. The wait was killing me, and I was waiting for three months to find her. I had my jet ready to go for the country she was in and the address she was at. I couldn’t wait for the call any longer. I got frustrated with it not ringing. I thought that it would take longer. I had asked the private investigator months ago to find her.
flashback
Thinking back to the day I hired the private investigator. I called him after an ad I saw in the paper for private investigator. It read ‘Fredrick’s Private investigating Service and we help you find whatever you need. Call 885-382 9721.” I called the number that was listed.
The phone rang and the voice on the other end said, “Hi this is Fredrick how may I help you.’
I replied, “Hi my name is Arlos, and I wanted to tell you that I need your help to find my sister.”
He asked a series of questions like, “Where does she live, and do you know anything about her?”
I answered, “no I just found out about her I wanted to find the information about the family and the country was adopted in.”
As I explained the back story of the way I found out she was adopted. He listened to the back story. He gave a sigh and had to think of what to say.
He said, “this is a tricky case because you don’t know where she since it was a closed adoption.”
“I know but can you find her and find the county and Address.”
End of flashback.
After the memory played in my head I head a ring from the phone. I picked up the phone to answer it. The moment I answered it Fredrick’s voice rang “I have found her, and she lives in Germany she lives with her new family.”
I jumped out of my chair, and I say, “do you have her family’s address?”
He says,” yes, it is it’s in Berlin Haptstr, 78.”
He told me that he would bring all the information in an envelope. And told him my address. I was waiting in the foyer. Waiting for the doorbell to ring to finally get to my house. I stood in the foyer pacing impatiently looking at the door. Finally, the doorbell rang I answered it.
He looked at me and said with his eyes this took so long to do. I glanced at the envelope then him “is this everything you found out about her.”
He looked and said, “yes.’
Little did we both know that the information was wrong, and she lived with her fiancé. I was just so excited to finally meet her. I grabbed my bags to get in my car to go to the jet. As I drove to my jet Ito take off. I was beaming to finally to have what I was missing. While I got on my jet and settled in for takeoff my phone rang.
I answered, “Hello Fredrick what do I owe this call too?”
“I wanted to tell you the information I gave you was wrong,” Fred said.
I Exclaimed, “What!”
I thought all the information was right. Then I was told the information was wrong. I paced back and forth on the jet. I was wanting to yell but didn’t.
Fredrick waited until I was calm again before he spoke “I will bring you the new address once my contact in Germany finds the correct address”
I took a deep breath and said, “ok tell me or bring me the address meet me on my jet.”
“Let me have another two hours to find the right address,” he admitted.
I thought to myself I hope it is a quick two hours to find this out.
I was waiting for this to resolve itself so I can leave from London to Germany. I was waiting for the new information for half an hour goes by now. I wanted to go and see my sister. I know she doesn’t know me, but I have always felt something was missing. I sat scowling at my phone waiting for him to tell me he was on the way. Trying not to be nervous I wanted to keep my nerves in check. I feared that I would never see her.
Then that call came in “Mr. Drake I have found the right address and here it is the Number is Haptstr, 98.”
I replied, “Are you sure this time so I could fly their immediately.’
He said, “yes go find her.”
I reply,” I will be heading out once my plane is ready to leave London.”
I sat on the jet waiting for takeoff to go to Germany his sister was in, then the pilot came in and told takeoff would be soon. I sat and waited for the pilot to come back in the seating area and said, “sorry sir the one of the engines have stopped working and it will be 2 days to fix.”
“I don’t have two days to wait I have to leave today,” he yelled.
The pilot looked at me and his eyes widened at the sheer anger in my eyes. When the pilot saw this, he shrined back in shock. He had never seen me like this before.
As I got off the jet, I was thinking how I could get to my sister in Germany. Then I remembered My friend. I went to track down my friend to see if I could borrow his jet. My friend was hard to track down because he never had his phone. My friend Andreo was quite unreachable at times. It took me three hours before I could reach him.
I thought to myself Andreo, where are you, why don’t you ever have your pone.
I was extremely on edge trying to contact my friend who seemed to leave his phone everywhere but his hand or pocket. The gravity of me finding my sister in Germany was making me anxious even more. Then came the moment I had a breakthrough in getting ahold of the person who never had his phone. I sat back on my jet waiting for him to call back.
Andreo finally called and greeted me, “hello Arlos what has you calling me several times…” he pauses, “what do you need my friend?”
I heard Andreo’s voice on the other end and said, “Andreo my old friend can I ask you a
favor!”
Andreo chuckled and replied, ‘yes what is the favor?”
I cleared my throat, “May I use your jet to find my sister.”
Andreo replied,” yes Arlos you may”
I thanked my friend profusely for his kindness. Then I set off to the tarmac and Andreo’s family got in. I was quite happy to find that I had someone looking for me. I went to the other side of the private jet hanger to get on my friend’s private jet. I was ready to get to Germany to find Aylla. Undenounced to me there was another problem ahead of me.
I was on the jet flying to my destination in Germany. It took an hour to get there from London. I was waiting to descend from the sky to the ground. I was told to get ready to land in Germany. I was still in the air looking out the window waiting to land when pilots came on the intercom.
His voice rang through the jet, “Please put your seatbelt on Mr. Arlos we are landing in Germany”
This was the moment of truth I was finally going to meet her. I feel the jet jerk before landing and the tarmac. I was met by the pilot in the sitting area. He was telling me I can unbuckle the seatbelt now.
“Sir you can unclasp the belt now and exit the jet now,” he told me.
I looked up at him with a smile in my eyes my only word I said, “ok.”
I get off the jet to go to the ca r I had order to go to my villa to drop off some things in my home office. I had bought this villa while I was in Germany seven months ago. I was at the villa getting ready to go to my Ayla’s house. I had jumped into one of my private cars, when I noticed it wouldn’t’ start and the other was getting serviced. and it is already 2 in the afternoon.
It took me two more hours to find another ride. I had to call my parents’ personal driver at their villa but I too a while to contact him. I called him to ask if he could pick me up.
“Hello, Hans, I would like a ride to my sister Aylla’s house”
He answered, “I will be there in thirty minutes sir.”
I sat in the living room waiting for the driver for my parents. He was my mode of transportation to get to Aylla. I waited for him to ring my doorbell. Then I rested on my couch waiting for him to get there. When I got another call from Hans. He told me so bad news.
“Sir Aros I am sorry to inform you…’. brief pause before he speaks again, “I have gotten stuck in traffic.”
My voice got loud, and I yelled, “Hans how long will it take for you to get here?’
He told me, “I will be there in one hour and thirty minutes.”
I say calmly, “ok I will be here waiting for you.”
I sit on my sofa waiting for him to tell me he is here. No matter what happens I seem to be having the worst luck today. Every moment I ha had is one mishap after another. I am getting annoyed by the problems that arise. Keep my eyes on the clock waiting for that sweet sound of someone at the door. I am anxious because of all the problems that I have been having getting to Aylla. I have been getting stressed over this.
This was the longest hour of my life waiting for the car I called for. The wait was so long I couldn’t go for one minute without muttering my frustration under my breath. I wanted to yell and scream at this, but I knew I couldn’t. This is not the driver’s fault.
Then the moment the truth happened the sound I had been waiting for. The doorbell rang and I answered the door.
Hans “Sir I am here can you tell me the address you want to get to.”
“Yes, I do here it is Haptstr, 98.” I say with a smile.
He looks at me and nods, “you will be there in no time.”
I get in the car to go to Ayla’s house, so I can meet her. I looked out the window in the car waiting to get to my sister’s house. I look at the beautiful scenery going by. The snow-covered mountains and the lush trees. I have always loved nature. I am excited and anxious to meet Ayla. Hopefully this meeting goes well.
I finally got to my sister’s house and knocked on the door. A man that I found out was her husband. He looks at me with a questioning gaze. He looks behind him to get someone’s attention. Then a young girl with my red curly hair comes to the door.
I ask her in German, “is your name Ayla”
She answers back, “yes, who are you?”
I smile at her and tell her., “I am your brother Arlos Drake.”
She looks at me with wide eyes and hugs me. She told me that she wanted to meet me and that her adoptive parents told her about me. She couldn’t meet her family until she was older. She was happy that I found her.
