THE ASYLUM

SHORT STORIES
I push up against the narrow space that confines me and my friend, squeezing myself against the narrow metal panels to get just an inch more space, at the cost of his own comfort. “You bastard, this is all your fault!” I exclaimed weakly, as I choked on the draft of dust I had just inhaled. “Me?! Joshua remarked, as he to inches for more room. “You’re really blaming me for this? When it was your idea that got us into this abandoned asylum in the first place!” He wheezed uncomfortably, as the putrid, mold-stained air choked his lungs. “Yes, it was my idea to go into the asylum, but it was your idea to see if the old elevator worked instead of going up the perfectly fine stairs!” I spat, my breathing becoming more labored. I kicked him a few times after issuing this retaliation, fruitless as it may be.
At first, admittedly, the elevator looked sound, but what we did not expect however is the dry rotted and wormy nature of the base floor, it had appeared functionable, but once our combined weight had been set upon it, the wooden edifice had given way beneath us like the spring door of the gallows. So now, we find ourselves pinned between the metal framework of the elevator and the remnants of the wood, held in suspension over the gleaming pit of the elevator shaft, with no source of egress by way of climbing upward. We were indeed trapped like rats in a metal coffin of our own creation. With every creak of the remaining wood that pins us in, and the groan of the rusted metal structure, our panic grew immensely with each passing second. Eventually, my own nervous and fear-stricken inclination betrayed both my intentions and my friend, as I began to kick and push into the wood that held us confined with in the metal sarcophagus, much to my friend’s horror as he began to sink downward with every blow. I closed my eyes for just one last kick, and prepared myself for what may occur, as I struck part of the metal that had kept the rotten wood in place, only to hear the shriek of my friend go from a loud roar to a descending wail of blood curdling fear.
