TWO POEMS by Nikolai Gumilev

Once, in an ascetic temple,
Before statue of Madonna,
He had vowed to be faithful
To the gaze evincing honor...

He forgot betrothal mystic,

Chasing easy love at random.

Daggered in a sour dispute,

He appeared at gates of heaven.

“Were you not inside my temple?”

Said the voice of stern Madonna,

“Taking vows to be faithful

To the gaze evincing honor?

Begone! Our Heav’nly Father

Gathers not unworthy harvests:

He who breaks a sacred vow

Perishes, unknown to Master.”

Inconsolable but stubborn,

He knelt down before Madonna:

“She was nowhere to be found—

One whose gaze evinces honor.”

Он поклялся в строгом храме
Перед статуей Мадонны,

Что он будет верен даме,
Той, чьи взоры непреклонны.

И забыл о тайном браке,
Всюду ласки расточая,
Ночью был зарезан в драке
И пришёл к преддверьям рая.

“Ты ль в Моём не клялся храме, —
Прозвучала речь Мадонны, —
Что ты будешь верен даме,
Той, чьи взоры непреклонны?

Отойди, не эти жатвы
Собирает Царь Небесный.
Кто нарушил слово клятвы,
Гибнет, Богу неизвестный”.

Но, печальный и упрямый,
Он припал к ногам Мадонны:
“Я нигде не встретил дамы,
Той, чьи взоры непреклонны”.

My dream is soaring off to Paris distant,

To you, to you alone!

I’m freezing cold. With no hope of seeing

Spring flowers in the snow…

I’m burdened by the moon. Incurably incessant

Are prickly wintry whims…

Oh, what a comfortless, despondent feeling

Of parting with your dreams!

Моя мечта летит к далёкому Парижу,
К тебе, к тебе одной.
Мне очень холодно. Я, верно, не увижу
Подснежников весной.

Мне грустно от луны. Как безнадёжно вьётся
Январский колкий снег.
О, как мучительно, как трудно расстаётся
С мечтою человек.

Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilev (also Gumilyov; Russian: Николай Степанович Гумилёв, IPA: [nʲɪkɐˈlaj sʲtʲɪˈpanəvʲɪtɕ ɡʊmʲɪˈlʲɵf] 1886 –1921 was a Russian poet, literary critic, traveler, and military officer. He was a co-founder of the Acmeist movement. He was the husband of Anna Akhmatova and the father of Lev Gumilev. Nikolai Gumilev was arrested and executed by the Cheka, the secret Soviet police force, in 1921.

Victoria Chernyak is a theatre dramaturg and translator. Her work has appeared in On the Seawall and the Adelaide Literary Magazine. It was also performed at the Valdez Theatre Conference, translation and adaptation workshops, stage readings and poetry roundtables.
